This architecture enables Consul to be easily installed on any platform, including directly onto the machine.

Consul uses an agent-based model where each node in the cluster runs a Consul Client. This client maintains a local cache that is efficiently updated from servers. As a result, all secure service communication APIs respond in microseconds and do not require any external communication. This allows us to do connection enforcement at the edge without communicating to central servers.

Istio flows requests to a central Mixer service and must push updates out via Pilot. This dramatically reduces the scalability of Istio, whereas Consul is able to efficiently distribute updates and perform all work on the edge. Consul provides layer 7 features for path-based routing, traffic shifting, load balancing, and telemetry. Consul enforces authorization and identity to layer 4 only — either the TLS connection can be established or it can't. We believe service identity should be tied to layer 4, whereas layer 7 should be used for routing, telemetry, etc.

We will be adding more layer 7 features to Consul in the future. The data plane for Consul is pluggable. It includes a built-in proxy with a larger performance trade off for ease of use.

What is Istio?

But you may also use third party proxies such as Envoy to leverage layer 7 features. The ability to use the right proxy for the job allows flexible heterogeneous deployments where different proxies may be more correct for the applications they're proxying.

We encourage users leverage the pluggable data plane layer and use a proxy which supports the layer 7 features necessary for the cluster. In addition to third party proxy support, applications can natively integrate with the Connect protocol.

As a result, the performance overhead of introducing Connect is negligible. These "Connect-native" applications can interact with any other Connect-capable services, whether they're using a proxy or are also Connect-native.

Consul implements automatic TLS certificate management complete with rotation support. Both leaf and root certificates can be rotated automatically across a large Consul cluster with zero disruption to connections.

The certificate management system is pluggable through code change in Consul and will be exposed as an external plugin system shortly. This enables Consul to work with any PKI solution. Dividing applications into independent services simplifies development, updates, and scaling. At the same time, it gives you many more moving parts to connect and secure. Managing all of the network services — load balancing, traffic management, authentication and authorization, etc. There is a collective term for this networked space between the services in your Kubernetes cluster: a service mesh.

With any group of networked applications, there is a slew of common behaviors that tend to spring up around them. Better to have a separate system that sits between the services and the network they talk to. This system would supply two key functions:. Istio works as a service mesh by providing two basic pieces of architecture for your cluster, a data plane and a control plane. All of this traffic is intercepted and redirected by a network proxying system.

A second component in the data plane, Mixergathers telemetry and statistics from Envoy and the flow of service-to-service traffic. It configures both the Envoy proxies and the Mixers that enforce the network policies for the services, such as who gets to talk to whom and when.

The control plane also provides a programmatic abstraction layer for the data plane and all of its behaviors. Istio Pilot takes the rules for traffic behavior provided by the control plane, and converts them into configurations applied by Envoy, based on how such things are managed locally.

Pilot will allow Istio to work with different orchestration systems besides Kubernetes, but behave consistently between them. Gallery takes user-specified configurations for Istio and converts them into valid configurations for the other control plane components.

This is another element that allows Istio to use different orchestration systems transparently. You can make any changes to the mesh programmatically by commanding Istio. You can also roll back those changes if they turn out to be unhealthy. A third advantage is observability. Istio also provides ways to fulfill common patterns that you see in a service mesh.

Istio provides a circuit breaker pattern as part of its standard library of policy enforcements. Finally, while Istio works most directly and deeply with Kubernetes, it is designed to be platform independent.

Istio plugs into the same open standards that Kubernetes itself relies on. Istio can also work in a stand-alone fashion on individual systems, or on other orchestration systems such as Mesos and Nomad.

The second level is with the IngressController or Gateway. Both solutions make use of a kubernetes Secret to store the TLS certificate and key. If a TLS certificate is not provided, a fake is used.

The Ingress resource can override the default TLS certificate by referencing an a different kubernetes Secret. When this happens, the Ingress specific Secret is mounted into the IngressController and added to the configuration for that route.

The reason that I think many technologists find the split concepts of data plane and control plane confusing is that for most people the data plane is familiar while the control plane is foreign. The new breed of software proxies are just really fancy versions of tools we have been using for a long time. However, we have also been using control planes for a long time, though most network operators might not associate that portion of the system with a piece of technology.

There reason for this is simple — most control planes in use today are… us. The proxies then consume the configuration and proceed with data plane processing using the updated settings. It is composed of the following pieces:.

Ultimately, the goal of a control plane is to set policy that will eventually be enacted by the data plane. More advanced control planes will abstract more of the system from the operator and require less handholding assuming they are working correctly!
